The Holdrege Duster Wrestling team sent three experienced wrestlers to the state tournament hoping to come away with some wins – which they did in a big way.

Senior Prestin Melroy, wrestling at 182, won four straight matches to come away with HHS’ first wrestling state championship since 1998. Coming in with a 45-1 record and a District Championship, Prestin won  his first match easily 14-2 over Ronnie Albertson from Fort Calhoun. He then defeated Central 10 Conference foe Jeb South from Northwest, 10-5 to advance to the semi-finals. Prestin made quick work of Seth Firmanik from Fairbury by pinning him in 3:34. He entered the championship match against a strong foe from Omaha Skutt – Eli Jansen. Prestin controlled the entire match, winning 6-1.  He finished the season with a 49-1 record and 153 total career wins.

Senior Zac Hurlbert, wrestling at 145, also advanced to the semi-finals with a quick pin and victory over Turner Korth from Hartington Cedar Catholic at the 0:39 mark – and a close 6-4 victory over Evan Canoyer from Waverly. Zac lost to eventual undefeated state champion Scott Fulsos from York in the semi-finals, and suffered a setback in the wrestle backs to Stone Mendez from Omaha Skutt in “sudden victory.” Wrestling for fifth place, Zac defeated Caleb Ackles from Adams Central 2-1. Hurlbert finished his career with over 100 wins.

Senior Bronson Titus, a four year qualifier in the state tournament, suffered a early setback to Trevor Nielsen from Plattsmouth. In the wrestle backs, he won by technical fall over Joe Garcia from Fort Calhoun 15-0. Bronson’s season ended in a close 6-5 defeat to Kaleb Taylor from McCook. Titus finished his career with over 100 wins.
